Year 1 RE with Reverend Rachel
In RE this term, Year 1 have been learning all about how water is precious to Christians and how it is used in Christian baptism.
Year 1 had a lovely afternoon visiting the church to learn more from Reverend Rachel about how water is used as a precious symbol during Christian baptism.
Reverend Rachel began by explaining why Christians choose to be baptised and what a special event it is for them. We were then shown the white robes worn by priests during the service as well as a beautiful, colourful stole with the symbol of the cross on it.
Parents and God parents were chosen to gather around and make promises to a doll which we would use later for a pretend baptism. We were then introduced to 4 special items which represented different symbols used in a baptism service: a shell. water, oil and a candle. We learned that the oil wasn't just the kind that we cooked with at home, but from a really important place, Winchester Cathedral. It had been blessed so that it could be used for baptism services in church.
Reverend Rachel then showed us an important part of the church, the font. The children gathered around to watch our lovely doll (affectionately named 'Jedward' by the children!) be baptised with water from the font. The sign of the cross was made on his head with the special oil. Finally, Jedward's parents then held the candle to represent the end of the service.
What a wonderful, hands on learning experience Year 1 had, it really brought their learning to life.
Thank you to Reverend Rachel for giving up her time to welcome us into the church.
