Year 6 Ash Wednesday Worship

Year 6 help to lead our whole school Ash Wednesday worship in church.
Earlier this term,Year 6 were given the very important job of supporting Reverend Rachel in leading the Ash Wednesday worship in church. As we learnt, Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent through fasting and reflection that prepares Christians for Easter. It is a time to remember the need for repentance.
Initially, the children were invited into church a number of days prior to the worship to burn palm crosses and write prayers. Reverend Rachel explained the purpose of the worship and the importance of coming before God to repent, as Christians do during this period.
Following on from Shrove Tuesday, our fabulous worship leaders then supported Reverend Rachel leading the whole school Ash Wednesday worship by leading prayers and hymns. They also drew ash crosses on the foreheads of Years 5 and 6 children and staff. These ashes symbolise grief over sin, humility before God, and the hope found in Christ's sacrifice on the cross.
It was a hugely meaningful service and experience and a great privilege for our Year 6 children to play such a significant role in leading an important worship in church. We will continue to reflect on Christ's sacrifices throughout lent, particularly in our RE lessons focusing on Salvation, and look forward to celebrating Easter in the coming weeks.
