Year 6 Wire Sculptures

Hear about Year 6's wire sculptures...
This half term, Year 6 have been learning about different mediums in art and have particularly focused on how wire can be manipulated to create artwork. In particular, we have studied wire artists Diane Komater and Alexander Calder, looking at the work they created and the techniques they use. As part of this, we had a go at drawing one of the artist's pieces without taking the pencil off of the paper in order to replicate the wire line.
From this learning, we have designed, created and evaluated our very own wire sculptures. This involved making prototypes of Galapagos animals out of paper clips, which taught us the importance of not overcomplicating designs and also how to twist, bend and manipulate wire effectively.
However, the next lesson was where the real challenge took place... making self-portraits out of wire! We had a great time designing our portraits using mirrors and pencils before creating them. Through this, we learned about the importance of perspective and often how less can be more.
